I Heart Saving Places: A Valentine For The Dream House

February 15, 2018

Earlier this month, my twin sister Sheryl brought up the idea of doing a "heart bomb" at The Everly Brothers Childhood Home for the National Trust for Historic Preservation's "I Heart Saving Places" February awareness campaign. Staying informed of the Trust's outreach activities, Sheryl also facilitated our group photo for National Preservation Month last May. To learn more, see my article: "This Place Matters Honors More Than Landmarks."

Sheryl and I thought phrases like "ForEverly Yours" or "Don and Phil ForEverly in Our Hearts" along with "This Place Matters" would be fantastic on candy gram hearts gracing Don and Phil's former home. Sheryl liked "Dream," given that the 60th anniversary of the recording of "All I Have To Do Is Dream" is on March 6th and her nickname for the historic cabin is "The Dream House" for the brothers' musical beginnings. Equipped with creativity and ideas, l reached out to the committee for approval and we started to work remotely with our friends in town.

Shenandoah Elementary Art Teacher Shelley Davidson created the hearts and our Project Co-Lead Bill Hillman helped affix them to the front of the home. An illuminated heart was also installed on a banner pole in the yard. I contacted Casey Freemyer, Sr. to help with photography and organizing the group photo. Bill and committee member Shelly Warner also contributed photos to document the effort.

In We Heart Saving Places: Heart Bombing Across America, the National Trust for Historic Preservation ranked the Everly home #5 out of #22 on their highlights list of participating historic places!

We're grateful to our friends and colleagues in Shenandoah for helping us send out this special Valentine to inspire love for this historic place! We hope it encourages more individuals to show their support by planning a visit the home, joining and sharing the Facebook page and making a donation to support our work on behalf of Everly heritage.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Sherry
